The District of Columbia's ethics board has issued a notice of violation against a former councilmember who pleaded guilty to taking $55,000 in bribes from undercover agents.

The city's Board of Ethics and Government Accountability could fine Michael A. Brown up to $165,000, or three times the amount he accepted in bribes. The board plans to serve Brown with a document informing him that he could be subject to sanctions.

Brown pleaded guilty in June and faces up to three years in prison. The son of the late former Commerce secretary Ron Brown served one term on the D.C. Council and lost his re-election bid in November. He dropped out of a special election this spring.

Brown admitted taking money from agents who posed as businessmen interested in government contracts.
