73-year-old woman mugged in Annandale

Posted: Updated:

A 73-year-old woman was the victim of a mugging in Annandale Tuesday.

The assailants got her purse. The victim went to the hospital.

On Tuesday at around 8 p.m., a 73-year-old woman stepped off a bus at a stop on Heritage Drive. Police say she was approached by a group of four young men, one of whom grabbed her purse. The woman said her assailant threatened her and then struck her several times; the foursome then fled with the purse.

Police say the 73-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with injuries described as "not life threatening."

Fairfax County residents -- especially older ones -- are outraged.

"I hope they catch the bastards," muttered Tony Cimaglia, who often shops in Annandale with his wife. "[The assailants] don't deserve to live."

Eduardo Castilho, who lives in Annandale, also expressed shock at the attack: "I mean, to attack an old lady like that ... you know, that's not supposed to happen around here."

The victim of the assault and robbery was able to give police only a minimal description of her young, male assailants: two of them were black and two of them were Hispanic. They were last seen in the vicinity of Heritage Drive in Annandale around 8 p.m. Tuesday.
