Massive Ferris wheel erected, joins Atlanta skyline

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Whether you're for it or against it, it's likely difficult not to admit that the first sight of the 20-story high Ferris wheel erected in downtown Atlanta isn't just a little impressive.

Crews working on an already delayed deadline are moving fast to get SkyView Atlanta up and running soon. In fact, the deadline on the table right now is next Tuesday, July 16.

SkyView Atlanta spokesman Jason Evans said, "We are ready to announce right now that we will be open for the public. We will have our grand opening, our ribbon cutting on Tuesday at noon. We hope a lot of people will come out here for it."

Work on the wheel is about three-quarters of way finished. Once completed, the wheel will hold 32 gondolas for passengers, be illuminated by about 1 million LED lights and monitored by well-equipped control room.

"The other cool thing about the room is that contained is here is the weather forecasting station that will allow us to check the weather from around the area. Is there lightning? Are there gusts of wind? Is there anything going on that we should be concerned about? We'll shut the wheel down if there are any problems. But, so far, everything's been great," a SkyView Atlanta employee said.

The wheel is expected to undergo dry runs and other tests this weekend.

The 200-foot tall Ferris wheel makes its home in the southern end of Centennial Olympic Park, in what is now a public parking lot located next to The Tabernacle.

It will be easy walking distance from World of Coke, The Georgia Aquarium, CNN Center, Phillips Arena, The Georgia Dome, and the Georgia World Congress Center.

Developers had said previously that the ride would cost $13.50 for adults and $8.50 for children. Discounted prices are expected for students, military and seniors.

The ride would go around four times and last about 15 minutes, according to developers.
