Howard County police say an officer shot a man who was brandishing a knife inside a Columbia store.

The shooting occurred after 11 a.m. Wednesday inside a BJ's Wholesale Club store on Snowden River Parkway. Police say when the man was approached by security staff for shoplifting, he threatened them with a knife.

Officers say the man ran from the store, picked up a stick and smashed the glass door of a bus. He could not get on the bus, so police say the man ran back into the store, still brandishing the knife.

Authorities say the man was confronted by a police officer and was shot.

Police said the man, identified as 33-year-old Howard Carvel Smith of Columbia, he is in critical condition at Shock Trauma in Baltimore.

The mug shot is from an assault arrest in August of 2012. Police have learned that at the time of the incident yesterday, Smith was wanted on an open warrant for a probation violation, which may have stemmed from the 2012 incident.

Howard County Police are identifying the officer in a police-involved shooting at a Columbia BJ’s store July 10.  PFC David Sharpe is an 8-year veteran assigned to southern district patrol.  He has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in this type of incident.

PFC Sharpe confronted Howard Carvel Smith, 33, after he threatened employees with  a knife in the store.  Smith remains in critical condition at Shock Trauma at this time.  The hospital has not released specific details about Smith’s injuries.
