American Red Cross issues emergency appeal for blood donors

(WJBK) -

The American Red Cross is issuing an emergency appeal for blood donors to help boost the supply that was drained by a drop in volunteers in June and during the Independence Day holiday.

There is a critical need for donors of all blood types and those with O negative, B negative and A negative blood are especially encouraged to roll up a sleeve and give. There is also a critical need for platelet donors as well.  Diane Ward, CEO for the Red Cross Southeast Michigan Blood Services Region said, "every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Each day donations come up short, less blood is available for these patients in need."

June and July can be among the most challenging months of the year for blood and platelet donations as regular donors delay giving while they adjust to summer schedules.

Each day, the American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region needs approximately 900 donors to step forward and give blood to ensure an adequate blood supply is available for patients all summer long.
