Police Officer Charged With DUI, Victim Speaks To FOX 29

PHILADELPHIA -

Officer Eugene Daniel who works in the 16th District is charged with DUI tonight.

The arrest comes after a Friday night crash with another car in West Philadelphia.

Tonight one of the victims of that crash speaks only to FOX 29.

Robin Akers never knew what hit her.

"We were just driving and all the sudden. smash..." she recalls.

That smash was a Dodge Magnum crashing into her red Chevy Impala Friday night on 33rd and Girard.

Inside her car, sat her 2 grand kids: a 2 year old girl and 14 year old Nayla, whose beautiful smile is now tarnished with a broken tooth.

Robin remembers asking, "'Why you knock my daughters tooth out?'"

"'I'm sorry'. . and then a whoosh a reek of alcohol came out of this mouth," Robin recalls how he reacted.

It was bad enough they were hit by a suspected drunk driver.

But today Akers finds out that the man who police say collided with her was an off-duty veteran Philadelphia Police officer. 53-year-old Eugene Daniel was the officer who collided with her. Sources say his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit to drive.

"The person that's there to protect and to save us is the person went around just hurting us," responds Akers.

Now with a smashed up car and a sore body, Akers says she wants an apology from Daniel and action from the police department..

"What do you think should happen to him if he's convicted? He should be fired. He's there to protect us not to kill us," she says.

Police can only tell us that Daniel still has his job but has been taken off the street and given desk duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
