Car Drives Into Schuylkill River

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Chaos and panic at the Schuylkill River along Kelly Drive after a Delaware County mother drove her silver sedan into the water with dozens of runners and walkers near it's path.

"And so I turned around and there's a car half submerged by the three angel statues on the other side of the river," says a runner.

Witnesses watched in shock, including Meredith Mariami's rowing club members. She says she rushed in with another coach to save the victim.

"We got her to unroll the window. We got her to get out and then the car began to sink," says Mariami. "He and I brought our boats together. Kind of sandwiched her between and started to talk. I called 911 as soon as I got over there."

But witnesses say one thing became clear.

She's telling us to go away she wants to die. She's just telling us to leave her alone," says the runner.

"Very adamant about not wanting our help, but you know what she's going to get it!" says Mariami.

The woman was rushed to Hahnemann Hospital for care.

"She's obviously someone in crisis and that's the way the situation is being handled right now," says Chief Inspector Sullivan.

The sedan has a car seat in it, which alarmed dive team members that searched for other possible victims. Thankfully they found no one.

This is at least the third vehicle to fall into the river from this area this year, and that worries Mariami since her club is always on the water.

"Is this something we need to be prepared for as a safety issue for our athletes? There are people out there with no coverage," says Mariami.
