O'Malley announces $650M in transportation plans in Prince George's County

Posted: Updated:

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley visited Prince George's County on Monday and announced a significant boost for the county.

There will be a $50 million investment for a new access road into the Branch Avenue Metro station and a pedestrian bridge across Route 5.

Also, he announced a $150 million investment for a new interchange at Route 4 and Suitland Parkway, and a $46 million investment for pedestrian safety and bicycle lanes across Prince George's County.

The governor says these projects combined will bring 4,000 jobs.

Officials spoke from the Branch Avenue Metro, a spot where they are hoping a federal agency will eventually relocate on Metro-owned land.

"The biggest thing that helps us in development is infrastructure,” says Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker. “You cannot do development in Prince George's County without having the resources."

O'Malley says Maryland has recovered 95 percent of the jobs lost during the recession, but the state must keep moving forward.
