City building display featuring American flag stirs debate

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A new display set to go up in city buildings is stirring up debate over how the American flag should be presented.

The presentation by artist Sheila Pree Bright features photographs of young people exhibiting "Old Glory" in some unorthodox manners. In one photo, a man is draped in the flag.  It is set to be displayed at numerous places, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and some public school buildings.

Atlanta City Councilmember Alex Wan voted against allowing the display in public buildings.

"It's art. It's meant to invoke a conversation, and where I had an issue with the fact that the United States flag code explicitly says not to wear the flag as apparel," Wan said.

Other City Council members voted to allow the display.

"People shouldn't get caught up on necessarily how it's presented, but just always remember that we're free to present it any way we like," said City Councilmember Michael Bond.

The majority of City Council voted to approve the display. Only two members, Alex Wan and Felicia Moore, voted against it.
