String of crimes concerns Decatur residents

Posted: Updated:
DECATUR, Ga. -

Residents are concerned about a rash of burglaries in a Decatur neighborhood.

Decatur police are working with law enforcement in DeKalb and Atlanta to try to crack down on rising crime.

The latest occurred on Wednesday morning when a woman was carjacked in a parking lot on Swanton Way. Police say a 15-year-old boy was arrested in that crime after he led them on a high-speed chase.

In another incident, three women were robbed at Oakhurst Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Residents in Decatur's Oakhurst, Winnona Park, and South Candler Street neighborhoods say they actively monitor the news and social media, plus they receive email alerts from Decatur police notifying them when a crime has occurred.

"A few of our friends have been targeted. Their cars have been broken in to for smash-and-grab type of things," said Jennifer Waldrop.

The park robbery was especially alarming for residents in this close-knit community.

"We talked about going to the park that Monday in fact during the day earlier than when the incident actually happened. But it makes us more absolutely aware of going on. A little more cautious and a little bit more weary," said Waldrop.

Some of Lucius and Danielle Herman's neighbors' homes have been hit in recent weeks. The long-time residents say this level of crime is unusual in their quiet community. Neighbors are keeping an eye out for trouble, hopeful that police can put an end to the crime wave before someone gets hurt.

"Seems like they are pretty bold with what they are doing during the day, sometimes even when people are home," said Lucius Herman. "So far, I don't think there have been any injuries but I suspect that could happen at some point. It seems like it is escalating to the point where something like that might happen."

The Decatur Police Department is working with authorities in DeKalb and Atlanta to determine if there are any similarities in the crimes committed.

Decatur police are holding a series of informative meetings next week for area residents.
