NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Department of Buildings has come to an agreement with the owners of Luna Park in Coney Island to partially demolish the swaying AstroTower, though it is not clear how fast that can happen.

Until that happens, the Cyclone roller coaster and other rides at Luna Park could stay closed on the Fourth of July and beyond because of concerns that the tower could collapse.

Cranes arrived at the site Wednesday evening to do the work. In a statement, Luna Park said it hoped to complete the work as soon as possible to that the shuttered portions of the amusement park can reopen to the public.

"We look forward to a safe and happy July 4th weekend that will continue as planned with fireworks after tonight's Brooklyn Cyclones game," Luna Park said in the statement. "On July 4th, Coney Island will host the 98th Annual International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Nathan's Famous, FourthFest at MCU Park, live music at Place to Beach and free fireworks at night."

The tower was seen swaying on Tuesday, prompting the FDNY and the Department of Buildings to clear out the amusement park as well as nearby streets and a portion of Surf Avenue, authorities said.

"We want to make sure that Coney is open to everybody but safety is obviously everybody's first priority so we will have an abundance of caution," Mayor Mike Bloomberg said Wednesday.

No one was either hurt or stuck by the swaying tower, the FDNY said.

The 275-foot-tall AstroTower ride has not been in use since at least 2008. It featured a rising observation car that offered 360-degree views of the Atlantic Ocean and the city skyline. Like all tall structures, the tower is supposed to sway in the wind, but wind was not a real factor on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Scream Zone at Luna Park, the Coney Island Raceway and the B&B Carousell reopened at around noon Wednesday. The New York Aquarium and many other businesses are also open. The boardwalk is closed between West 10th Street and West 12th Street, officials said.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
