Rabid raccoon found dead in Gaithersburg resident's yard

GAITHERSBURG, Md -

A rabid raccoon was found dead Thursday in the backyard of a Gaithersburg resident's home.

The infected animal had been in an altercation with the resident's two dogs in the 200 block of East Deer Park Drive. Gaithersburg Animal Control officers tested the body and confirmed the raccoon was infected with the rabies virus.

Rabies can be fatal to humans or animals if they do not receive treatment after being exposed. If you were in direct contact with a raccoon in this area in the last several weeks, contact the Montgomery County Health Department immediately at 240-777-1755. If your pet has had any direct contact with a raccoon in this area in the last several weeks, please contact Gaithersburg Animal Control at 301-258-6343.
