We pay the highest in the country. Sales tax on every gallon of gas we buy up and down California. You can thank our lawmakers in Sacramento and then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for making it law back in 2010. It's an excise tax that lawmakers can increase every year.
And, starting July First, another 3 cents per gallon is now added to each gallon of gas.
This latest tax increase brings the total state sales tax to 39 and a half cents per gallon. Then, add in the federal tax, and it adds up to 72 cents a gallon, all going towards taxes. That is the highest in the country. A little under half of what you pay at the pumps per gallon goes for taxes and fees, and not for the actual cost of crude oil that's' refined into gasoline.
