Va abortion-rights group cites ultrasound problems

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, Va. -

An abortion-rights group says some crisis pregnancy centers are using Virginia's year-old ultrasound law to try to stymie women who are seeking an abortion.

NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia makes that claim in a report released Monday on its yearlong investigation of 56 anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers in the state. The report includes a section on the law passed by the legislature last year requiring women to undergo an ultrasound before getting an abortion.

One provision of that law requires abortion clinics to tell patients where they can get a free ultrasound. The list of such providers consists entirely of crisis pregnancy centers. NARAL says some of those centers refuse to provide the ultrasound image to women if they plan to use it for an abortion appointment. The centers deny the allegation.
