Jennifer Lopez apologizes for Turkmenistan performance

Posted: Updated:

Entertainer Jennifer Lopez is apologizing for singing 'Happy Birthday' to the president of Turkmenistan.

The singer was about to take the stage when she was asked to croon the song for the nation's leader.

But according to Lopez's publicist she had no idea Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow has been accused of atrocious human rights violations as president of the former Soviet bloc nation.

"Had there been knowledge of human rights issues any kind, Jennifer would not have attended," Lopez's publicist told People magazine.

The event was hosted by the China National Petroleum Corp.
