The windshield on this Philadelphia police cruiser shattered.

Investigators say a naked man acting violent and erratic hopped on the hood of a Philadelphia Police cruiser then started punching it shattering the windshield.

Police  say the suspect's violent episode triggered the officer sitting in the driver seat to fire two shots through the window. The  early morning blasts woke Victoria from her sleep around 5 Saturday  morning.

"To shoot him period they could have called for backup the man is naked. He didn't have anything on him. That's just not right."

Despite suffering gunshot wounds to the chest and elbow--police say the man walked a block away to Woodstock and Westmoreland before collapsing.

Police aren't confirming if drugs are involved. But they say the man's erratic behavior was first spotted by a patrolman who called for backup with a taser at nearby 22nd and Allegheny in Toga.

Investigators say the unidentified man was tossing around a metal newspaper stand and throwing rocks at passing cars. They say he even laid down in the middle of the street in front of SEPTA bus.

A spike in police involved shootings has sparked Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey to request a federal review of the department's deadly force procedures.

Police say the wounded man is in critical but stable condition.

The officer from the 39th District that fired his weapon has been routinely put on administrative duty while internal affairs investigates.
