DTE working to restore power to tens of thousands after storms

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

Five minutes in the midst of a storm stirred up all sorts of confusion. The wind was mean and on a mission. Bloomfield Township is where it seemed to focus its strength with tremendous force. A block of Lochridge got beat up bad.

"It's devastating to come outside, and the fire at the end of the street, that kept surging. I've never seen an electric fire. That fire was about as tall as my house at one point and as wide as two king mattresses," said a resident.

There are downed power lines by the dozens.

"We've got about 360 wire downs," said a DTE Energy spokesperson. "The damage is really amazing ... three foot trees just snapped in half like toothpicks."

At first count, 113,000 DTE customers were affected by the wicked weather. However, that number is coming down.

"Last night, we focused on the circuits that had 3,000 or more customers out of power at once, and when you do restoration activities, you take the most customers out and you slowly work down to the circuits with the least amount," the representative said.

DTE crews are working hard and putting in long hours. The goal is simple, getting everyone restored as fast as possible. Crews from Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania are making their way to Southeast Michigan to help.

"We think everybody should be restored by Sunday," the spokesperson said.
