Bobby Ferguson to get court appointed attorney for bid rigging case

DETROIT (WJBK) -

He won millions of dollars in public contracts while his friend Kwame Kilpatrick was mayor of Detroit, but now Bobby Ferguson says he is broke and can't afford to hire his own attorney.

Ferguson spared no expense when he and Kilpatrick were on trial for public corruption, but even his top notch legal team couldn't help him beat the rap. Jurors found him guilty on nine counts that could keep him in prison for 20 years.

While Ferguson appeals those convictions, he is also fighting bid rigging charges.

Ferguson refused to detail his finances showing that he qualified for legal aid. So federal judge David Lawson called him to court to determine whether he should get a court appointed attorney for the bid rigging case.

Thursday's hearing was unusual in that the judge asked even the prosecutors to leave the courtroom as Ferguson disclosed his financial details.

Ferguson's testimony behind closed doors convinced the judge that the former contractor needs a court appointed attorney. Ferguson may find out next week who will defend him against the bid rigging charges. It is not clear when that case will go to trial.

Despite the ruling on Thursday, Ferguson still could end up paying some of his legal bills, but only if Ferguson or the feds discover he has more money than he thinks.
