Got tattoo regret? A new treatment can help

Posted: Updated:

If you're thinking about a tattoo, think about this: that permanent ink is permanent.  But what happens when you have tattoo regret?  It turns out there's a new way to erase that ink, but it'll cost you.

Tattoos might tell your stories, but what do you do when the story changes?  We break up, we grow up, and we move on.  But tattoos, like the one of a blue M&M on Michelle Bedwell's backside, are there forever. Bedwell says she loved the tattoo when she was 18.

"But then the older I got, I was like, what am I doing?  There is an M & M on my back, it's a blue ball, and I just didn't like it at all," said Bedwell.

But 10 years later, it's still there.  So, Michelle decided it was time for it to go.  The dermatologist she works for, Dr. Rutledge Forney, started using the PicoSure laser.  Rutledge says it can erase a tattoo in half the treatments needed with other lasers.

"It takes ink in the skin, which looks like a big chunk, and explodes it into pieces," Forney explained.  "It used to be the old technology, it would take a big piece and then cut it in half, and cut it in half, and finally it would get small enough that the body could take it away-- but it took 8 to 12 treatments to get rid of a tattoo."

Bedwell will need four or five treatments to remove her tattoo.  After the second treatment, it's starting to fade.  She says it hurt a little bit, but felt like getting a tattoo.

The price of the PicoSure laser treatment varies, depending on the size, color and age of your tattoo, and its location.  For a tattoo the size of Michelle's, the total cost for four or five treatments would be about $1,600 to $2,000, or roughly about 20 times what she paid to get it inked on.
