Reimagine Phoenix: Transforming trash into resources

Posted: Updated:

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton says the city could be doing a better job of recycling and he's challenging residents and businesses to do their part.

On Wednesday, he announced a new program called Reimagine Phoenix.  Its motto is reduce, re-use, recycle, reconsider and imagine.

The Mayor wants to cut back the amount of trash that ends up in landfills.

He's asking the public works department to step up composting efforts and expand a green organics program to include food products.

"When looking at all categories of trash, food consumes one of the largest amounts of space in a landfill.  The less food that has to be transported to a landfill, the lower the trucking costs and the longer life our landfill we have," said Stanton.

The Mayor also proposed allowing residents to get smaller trash cans so more items will end up in recycling bins -- and residents would save money on their garbage bills.
