Fire damages 15 units of Woodridge complex

WOODRIDGE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A fire at west suburban Woodridge apartment building left 15 units uninhabitable Wednesday morning.

A resident called management about 11:30 a.m. to report smoke coming from a wall of their apartment in the 7400 block of Woodward Avenue in Woodridge, according to a release from the Lisle-Woodridge Fire Protection District. The management office then called 911.

Maintenance units rushed to the smoky unit and activated the fire alarm system, the fire protection district said.Aall the residents of the three-story building with more than 40 units escaped unharmed.

Responding firefighters found smoke coming from the roof of the building and requested additional help to prevent the fire from spreading in the hot weather, according to the fire protection district.

The blaze left 15 units uninhabitable and caused "moderate" damage to the building, the fire protection district said. The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
