Good And Bad News After PSPCA Rescues Animals From Home

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Agents with the Pennsylvania SPCA arrested Carl and Kathleen Grieco and charged them with animal cruelty. This was after the PSPCA seized 14 Maltese dogs and three cats living in squalor on the 2800 block of Walnut Hill Street.

"You can't breathe. your eyes water. You can't even catch a breath down there. Ammonia-wise, this is the worst house I've ever been in," reflected George Bengal, one of the PSPCA officials who raided the house.

"You can see the matting is so thick that you can't even feel the paws here..." a PSPCA nurse describes one of the dogs.

The dogs, most of them suffering from severe flea infestation and skin ailments including open wounds, are being nursed back to health in protective custody at the PSPCA.

Officials there predict all 17 animals taken in the raid will survive.

But since the animals were seized by authorities and not surrendered by the couple, they can't be adopted out any time soon.

"They will be held until the case is adjudicated through the court system. Which means they could be here for a couple of months to maybe even a couple of years," explains Wendy Marano, a PSPCA official.

No one answered the door when FOX 29 visited the Grieco home. But we saw evidence that a city-ordered clean-up is underway. We also saw three dead mice in the driveway, and neighbors say that's just the tip of the iceberg!

Neighbor Orlando Antonetti also has seen mice. "Oh, yeah. We saw two dead ones there," he remembers. "Two dead ones on the other side. They're dying all over. And they're trying to get into people's houses and stuff."

It was trash-collection day on Walnut Hill. Neighbors told us a feces-stained couch put out in front of the raided house, was apparently a home for lots of furry little critters.

"I saw the rats and mice coming out of the sofa itself," describes Orlando Antonetti. "That's how bad it was."

Fox 29 called the health department's rat control hotline today to try and get some city help for neighbors worried about those dislodged rodents.

The recording says they'll call back within three business days.

Maybe they can also convince the critters to stay put till then.
