Water employee fired for hunting on city property

Posted: Updated:

A city of Atlanta worker has been fired for bringing a bow and arrow onto city property.

David Palmer, a Department of Watershed Management employee, allegedly used the weapon while hunting deer on land owned by the water department in northwest Atlanta.

Officials said that Palmer violated the "no weapons" provision and was terminated.

Dean Williams, one of Palmer's supervisors, said he learned about it during a discussion of hunting sites. Williams said that he told Palmer that the location was off limits.

Days later, Williams said that he saw Palmer on the property. He said Palmer admitted to killing a deer.

Palmer admitted that he was taking his deer stand to the property, but he claimed that he used it for observation, but not hunting.

Both sides made their case before the city's personnel board on Tuesday. The board will make a decision in the next couple of weeks if Palmer's termination will be upheld.
