Jewelry store owner killed during robbery in Villa Rica

VILLA RICA, Ga. -

A beloved jewelry store owner was fatally shot during a robbery in Villa Rica on Wednesday.

Four men went into Mobley Jewelers with hammers just after 1 p.m., according to the Carroll County Sheriff's Department. At some point, shots were fired and the store's owner, Mitch Mobley, was killed.

Authorities arrested a 16-year-old suspect nearby on Highway 61; three others are still on the run. They got away in a small black vehicle described as perhaps a Jetta or a Ford Taurus.

Police are reviewing surveillance video in order to get images of the suspects.

Outside the store, friends and customers shook with emotion and tried to console each other.

"Just one of the tragedies of our area," said Pastor Herman Parker. "We just can't believe it. We're still in shock, all of us are."

The slain store owner was remembered as a remarkable man.

"He just goes out of his way, not just for jewelry, if you come in and you're having a bad day…he'll always say something great just to make you feel better before you walk out," said Kerri Walker.

Parker said that Mobley's wife and one of their sons is out of the country in Hong Kong. They are making their way back to Georgia.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call authorities.
