Star-Ledger paper threatens closure in union talks

Posted: Updated:

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The publisher of the Star-Ledger is threatening to close New Jersey's largest newspaper by year's end if its production unions don't make concessions by Sept. 27.

In a letter Wednesday to the staff, publisher Rich Vezza says the company felt "pushed into a corner" by the unions. But he says he's optimistic they will understand an agreement is in everyone's best interest.

The Star-Ledger has asked the production unions for $9 million in savings. It says that's how much could be saved by outsourcing printing and packaging.

The paper is part of Advance Publications Inc., a privately held company owned by the Newhouse family.

Vezza says the Ledger lost nearly $20 million last year and expects to lose about the same amount this year.

Messages left for two unions were not immediately returned.
