Flammable materials left at fire station

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

The Phoenix Fire Department is investigating after a box full of flammable and explosive materials was left at the station near 7th Street and Greenway.

A man dropped off the box about 6:30 p.m. and left.

Individual containers of chemicals used to make explosives were inside the box. Some of the chemicals were illegal to possess.

A firefighter with ordnance training recognized some of the materials, and the decision was made to call in experts and rope off the box.

Authorities took the proper safety precautions with the chemicals, calling in the bomb squad and a hazmat team. The materials are illegal, but not dangerous.

"But the fire station for this type of material is not the place to drop it off, it would have been better off if they called somebody to come out to their home and look at it and take care of it there," said Phoenix Fire Capt. Larry Nunez.

Police and Fire are now trying to track down the man who left those chemicals there in the first place.
