Potomac River search suspended for missing swimmer

Posted: Updated:
POTOMAC, Md. -

Rescue teams from Montgomery and Fairfax Counties and the National Park Service have suspended searching for a 19-year-old missing in the Potomac River. They are going to reassess the search Tuesday afternoon.

The teen apparently disappeared under water Monday afternoon while swimming with friends off of Purple Horse Beach. It is located at the bottom of Billy Goat Trail, Section A, off of the C&O towpath, not far from Old Angler's Inn. The beach is on the Maryland side of Mather Gorge, which is deep with strong downward currents and large rocks.

It is important to note swimming or wading in the Potomac River is illegal.

Crews searched by land, boat and helicopter. They had to suspend their efforts briefly Monday during passing thunderstorms, then resumed until dark.

Officials say at this point, they are in recovery mode.

Rescue crews were already in the area when they got the call about the missing 19-year-old. They had just rescued four people in Mather Gorge after their boat overturned. All four made it out of the water safely. There is no word what kind of boat they were using or what caused it to flip.
