Speed limit increases on Beltway 495 Express Lanes

Posted: Updated:
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -

The speed limit of the 495 Express Lanes on the Capital Beltway of Virginia rises to 65 mph on Monday.

“The speed limit increase makes a great travel option better by providing an even faster option to drivers in Northern Virginia,” said Michael Whelan, the Vice President of Operations for Transurban, in a statement.

The speed limit on the mainline Beltway lanes remains 55 mph. Drivers on the Express Lanes will see new signs on the left side of the roadway reflecting the change.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Express Lanes team determined the speed increase was safe after conducting safety studies. VDOT indicates the change is safe for merging and changing lanes.

The Express Lanes are new high occupancy toll (HOT) lanes on the I-495/Capital Beltway. The HOT lanes are from Springfield Interchange to north of the Dulles Toll Road.

A few tips for drivers using the Express lanes are:

-purchase an E-Z Pass. Make sure it is mounted correctly containing the appropriate funds.

-Understand the rules of the road. Drivers should pay attention to the barrier that divides the mainline Beltway from the Express Lanes. Use signs as a guide and avoid distractions.

-Know your route ahead of time. Visit the Express Lanes website to enter and exit the lanes at each interchange.

-The 495 Express Lanes are open 24-seven. All drivers will need an E-Z Pass to use those lanes. There are no toll booths or options to pay cash.

Questions about the Express Lanes can be answered by the customer service center.
