Fun Summer Kids Crafts, Put a Pin In It!

Posted: Updated:

For today's 'Put a Pin In It', Sandra Oh Lin, the founder of Kiwi Crate, an e-commerce company that delivers hands-on activities that encourage creativity and learning for kids. We had Lisa Breckenridge's Daughter Elsie come in and test out some of the fun Summer learning games with Maria this morning!

Magic Potion Spoons

Just like the salt vs. fresh water experiment, this activity is pretty magical too. You'll need spoons, food coloring, vinegar, baking soda, cups and a baking sheet. This is a fun one to prepare on your own before involving the kiddos. First, add a couple of drops of food coloring to the spoons. Then add baking soda to the spoons - to cover up the color. Place cups of vinegar on the baking sheet.

Then, have your kids pick a spoon and stir it into a cup of vinegar. What happens? After they're done stirring, they can actually use the cups for lessons in color mixing. What happens when you mix blue and yellow, etc.? Inevitably, with my son, we end up with brown, but it's fun along the way!

Salt Water vs. Fresh Water Experiment

One of the advisors to Kiwi Crate, who is a professor of science education came up with this experiment. Sandra's daughter was floored to see how fresh water differs from salt water - besides the taste!

For this activity all you need salt, glasses of water, food coloring and ice.
In one glass of water, add some ice. In the other glass, stir in salt until it dissolves and then ice.

Add a few drops of food coloring to the glass of ice water. The color disperses. When you do the same with the glass of ice salt water, what happens? The food coloring stays on top. The salt water is heavier than the fresh water layer from the ice. That's where the color is trapped.
After running the experiment, it's a perfect opportunity to ask about what they observed and what they think happened.

Rubber Duck Math Game and Fishing for Numbers

So many of us have water tables and rubber bath toys in our home. Here's a way to turn these into a fun learning activity.

Simply gather all your rubber bath toys together and use permanent markers to write numbers on the bottom.

Place the rubber ducks and the like in your water table, and take turns with your child "fishing" to pick numbers.

Depending on your child's development, you can use this to simply identify numbers or you can practice different functions like addition. That is, pick out 2 numbers then add them.

Kiwi Crate delivers monthly projects for kids 3-7, with all materials and inspiration included. This summer, Kiwi Crate is offering a three-month discovery series with themes that are designed to encourage curiosity, exploration and creativity!

With school out of the summer, we're all looking forward to carefree happy times where kids can be kids. But all young people experience learning losses when they don't engage in educational activities over the summer. But here to show us fun activities to prevent summer slide is Sandra Oh Lin, founder of Kiwi Crate.
