Prince George's County police say a little girl playing on a scooter was abducted at gunpoint and sexually assaulted Saturday afternoon in the Marlton area of Upper Marlboro.
Investigators say the 7-year-old was dragged into the woods next to an apartment complex by an older white male with a gray beard.
Prince George's County police say the little girl had separated from her friends and was taking a spin by herself down a tree-lined path around 3 p.m. when a man with a gun forced her into the woods.
Just after 1 p.m. Monday, police cadets from the academy spread out in the vicinity of where the assault occurred and conducted a grid search.
With only one witness and no surveillance video, investigators were looking for anything that could help them solve the crime.
Investigators and K-9 teams had been at the complex on Heathermoore Boulevard since Saturday and were back again Monday afternoon.
"What we can tell you right now is the victim is describing the suspect as an older white man with a heavy build,” said Julie Parker with Prince George’s County Police. “He's bald and has a goatee style beard with no mustache. He was last seen on foot in this area.”
Investigators say the girl was on her scooter riding alone along a concrete path when the man came out of the woods with a gun.
"Our investigators have done extensive interviews with this young girl and have determined a sexual assault did occur," said Parker.
Clarence Dempsey, who moved his family to Marlton after he says someone attempted to abduct his daughter last year, said he had just learned what happened Monday morning.
"I have two daughters, one 8 [years old] and one 5 [years old], and for a man to want to touch a little girl like that or even a little boy, it's insane," he said.
Terri Coates, who was out walking her dogs as police arrived back in the neighborhood, says she learned the news Monday as well.
"I can't believe it. I see kids out here playing by themselves and usually in front of their own homes, but they are usually in groups, so I'm shocked this could happen to one kid," she said.
With little to go on, police are asking for anyone who was in the area Saturday around 3 p.m. to think back on anything they might have seen that could help investigators close this case.
Prince George's County police are calling the assault disturbing and highly unusual.
The girl reported the attack immediately after it happened and was reunited with her mother before being taken to a hospital for treatment.
