Shooting at Oak Brook Mall

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Police say a thief was shot in the abdomen and two other suspects have escaped after three men attempted to rob a jewelry store at the Oak Brook Mall. The incident prompted a nearly two hour lock down of the popular shopping center.

The shooting happened inside the "CD Peacock" jewelry store. Its website shows fine diamonds costing more than 800-thousand dollars.

The suspect apparently used a sledge hammer to smash a glass display case filled with jewelry while two men acted as lookouts. When asked to drop the hammer, the suspect refused forcing the security guard to fire one shot.

Shoppers were taken aback by the mall shooting. Heather Mahler, who was in the mall at the time, said she heard that someone went into "CD Peacock" and robbed the store and that a security guard was able to handle the situation.

Oak Brook's police chief tells us the two suspects at large took off in a black Jeep Liberty, stolen from a mall employee.
