DC Serial Stabbing Arrest

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC -

According to court documents, blood has been observed on at least two pieces of clothing associated with the man arrested in connection with the stabbing of a D.C. woman in the city's Petworth neighborhood.  Over the past few weeks, four different women have been stabbed by a man who, police say, said nothing and stole nothing.  Police believe the suspect may be tied to all four cases.

20-year-old Garey Jones, III of Emerson St., NW, has been arrested and charged assault with a dangerous weapon, a knife, in connection with the most recent attack on Allison St., NW.

It was revealed in court that a D.C. police sergeant noticed Jones acting a little oddly around 11:00 p.m. on Thursday in the Petworth neighborhood and went over to speak with Jones.  The sergeant also noticed some dried blood on one of the suspect's pants legs  Jones told the sergeant he had gotten the blood in a fight, and that he carries a folding pocket knife for protection.

The observations and the conversation were not enough to make an arrest, but they were enough to convince a D.C. judge to issue a search warrant for Jones' home, which is on the same street in Petworth where the first attack took place on May 5th.  According to court documents, the search turned up clothing that matched the descriptions from several of the stabbing victims.  And another article of clothing also had dried blood on it.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier praised the police work that cracked the case, pointing out the sergeant is a detective who had stationed himself in Petworth around the same time in the evening when some of the earlier attacks had occurred.

There is some evidence in the case that is somewhat helpful Garey Jones.  For example, one of the female victims failed to identify Jones when presented with an array of multiple suspect photos; in fact, say police, she picked out a photo of a man who had nothing to do with the case.

According to court documents, the suspect's mother told detectives her son suffers from a mental disorder, and detectives recovered a prescription medicine normally used to treat a bipolar disorder and/or schizophrenia.

A D.C. Superior Court judge has ordered Garey Jones III held without bond until a further hearing scheduled for June 25th.
