DuBose won't run again for Georgia NAACP president

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - The man who has led the Georgia NAACP for the past eight years says he plans to step aside this fall.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports Edward DuBose said Saturday he plans to let the state NAACP elect a new president at its October convention. At a news conference in his hometown of Columbus, DuBose said, "It's time for me to pass the torch."

DuBose was elected president of the Georgia NAACP in October 2005 and is finishing his fourth term.

The civil rights organization's 71st Georgia convention will open in Columbus on Oct. 3. DuBose says he wanted to end his presidency "saying goodbye to the home crowd."
