Glendale officer recovers following shootout

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say the Glendale police officer who was wounded during a shootout has been released from the hospital.

Sgt. Jay O'Neill said Saturday that K9 Officer Wes Zygmont is continuing to recover and has the support of his family and fellow officers.

Police say they were trying to arrest a suspect after a chase Thursday night when the man pulled out a gun and shots were fired.

Twenty-year-old Jourdan Akili Wagner was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Zygmont was treated for non-life threatening injuries, but his police dog died.

The chase started after an employee at a Glendale convenience store reported someone acting suspiciously in the store. When officers and the K9 arrived, the suspect took off running.

Authorities say the suspect ran through yards and threatened residents with a gun.
