Somerdale Family Needs Home For Son After Hospital Release

Posted: Updated:

Little Riley O'Brien is due to be released from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia next month following a double lung/heart transplant in early March.

The 5-year-old was born with Heterotaxy Syndrome, a rare heart defect along with Complex Congenital Heart Disease.

His mom Carol is thrilled to see the end of her son's hospital stay, but has no idea where they will go once he gets out.

"There's a lot of anxiety now we have a date coming to go home but we don't have a home to take him too."

She tells FOX29 her Somerdale NJ house is plagued with mold and asbestos. She worries what that will do to his new organs.

"It would destroy his new lungs," she said.

Habitat for Humanity out of Camden County stepped in at first to see if a new addition to the house could give Riley a safe haven to return to, along with mold clean up.

Officials there tell FOX29 they realized the house would have to be demolished and rebuilt since there are other problems, including an unstable beam helping to hold the house up.

The property used to be a business and the family says the only way to rebuild would be to have their mortgage company forgive the loan.

They are working with the bank to do that but will need transitional housing in the meantime, when Riley gets out of the hospital.
