Brewer vetoes 1 unemployment bill, cites cost

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Jan Brewer has vetoed 1 of several bills changing how the state's unemployment insurance systems works.

Brewer rejected SB1369 on Wednesday, saying it would cost the state unemployment insurance fund too much money. Brewer's veto letter noted that if it had been in place last year it could have cost $5.4 million.

The state's unemployment fund has had to borrow money from the federal government to pay unemployment benefits during the recession.

The bill Brewer vetoed would have allowed employers who make payments get refunds if it is later determined a worker improperly received benefits.

Brewer signed a bill in March requiring workers to present documents showing they were fired before they can receive benefits. Previously, the burden was on employers to fight fraudulent claims.
