Hundreds protest against IRS outside US Capitol at Tea Party rally

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, DC -

Hundreds of people rallied outside the U.S. Capitol to protest abuses by the Internal Revenue Service.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., told the rally organized by Tea Party Patriots that he was "horrified" to learn of government officials "persecuting people for their religious and their political beliefs."

Sen. Ted Cruz denounced the questions that a group opposing abortion was asked when it applied for a tax exemption. The Texas Republican said, "The IRS has no business asking any American, 'What are the content of your prayers?'"

Speakers at the rally called for the IRS to be abolished and replaced with a flat tax that would require all Americans to pay something.

Talk show host Glenn Beck delivered a lengthy tirade against political corruption and urged Americans to turn back to God.
