Amazon could be moving into Hillsborough County, and with it, there would be a lot of jobs.
Commissioners may offer them something to make it worth their while. If it happens, it could generate up to $200 million in cash for the state.
To lure them in, commissioners are dangling a package that includes $7.5 million in local and state tax breaks.
The proposal is to build a large state-of-the-art facility that would be about five times the size of an average Walmart superstore.
It would create thousands of jobs. Three-hundred and seventy-five of them would be higher-wage quality positions, with an average of more than $47,000 per year.
The location under consideration is in the South Shore Corporate Park, which is located near State Road 674 and I-75.
"It's going to be automated, but yet, you're creating a thousand jobs," Commissioner Ken Hagen said. "It's kind of a unique situation because typically when you have automation that means you have less jobs. But this has been explained to me as some sort of a hybrid situation – that is highly automated but creating a thousand jobs, so it's an extraordinary opportunity."
The corporate park is in desperate need of businesses to move in, and that's one reason why Hagan says Amazon would be a perfect fit in this community.
Right now, it's only a proposal. Commissioners will be discussing all the options on the table Wednesday.
