Clearwater police meet with residents about Chunky Sunday

Posted: Updated:

Spontaneous Sunday parties in Clearwater have spiraled a bit out of control lately.

They are called "Chunky Sunday's" and the police chief wants to reign them in.

The parties, which can grow to 1,000 people or more, are typically held in little neighborhood parks in Clearwater. Parks that can't handle the number of people or noise.

Clearwater's Chief of Police met with organizers of the parties Tuesday and told FOX13 both sides made some pretty good progress.

"at the meeting we were told today by the community, do your job.. enforce the law. because we agree that there shouldn't be loud music going out through the neighborhood, but at the same time, give us a place where we can meet and talk and gather, " Chief Anthony Holloway said.

its just a gathering, you know people come together, family friends, you know they just come out and have a good time. They're showing off their cars, they're putting on their best dress, there's nothing bad going on if there is anything bad going on and they are breaking the law then they need to be arrested." said Chantala Simmons who goes to the gatherings.

She says they just want a place to get together with family and friends.
