Report: Rangers to hire Alain Vigneault as head coach

Posted: Updated:

A published report by ESPN says the New York Rangers will hire Alain Vigneault as the club’s next head coach.

Vigneault met with Madison Square Garden and team owner Jim Dolan on Friday after interviewing on Tuesday in La Quinta, California with president/general manager Glen Sather.

Though details remain to be finalized between the Rangers, Canucks and the 52-year-old coach, who remains under contract with Vancouver for one or two more seasons, the commitment is mutual.

Vigneault, who was fired last month by Vancouver, had a five-year offer on the table from the Dallas Stars before informing Dallas GM Jim Nill on Friday that he was withdrawing his candidacy for that job.

According to the NY Post, the agreement between the Rangers and Vigneault is not expected to come before Monday.

On Friday, legendary former player Mark Messier confirmed that he had spoken to Rangers GM Glen Sather about coaching the team, but the Blueshirts have apparently decided to go in a different direction.

A law enforcement official says he sent a video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancée to an NFL executive five months ago, while league executives have insisted they didn't see the violent images until this week. The person played The Associated Press a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirming the video arrived. A female voice expresses thanks and says: "You're right. It's terrible."
