Special Father's Day: Daughter donates kidney to dad

Posted: Updated:

This Father's Day is going to be extra special for Johnny Carter. The father is alive and well after receiving a kidney from his 27-year-old daughter Allison two weeks ago.

"Allison said from day one, she said she was going to be the donor," said Johnny Carter.

Johnny Carter resisted at first, but later agreed to accept the donation of a kidney from  his adopted daughter.

"It was meant to be. Somebody said the Lord had a plan from day one, and he did," said Johnny Carter.

The surgery at Piedmont Hospital followed the diagnosis of a rare disorder that sent Mr. Carter into kidney failure. He's now looking forward to spending Father's Day with his family.

"She said, ‘What am I going to get you for Father's Day? I said, ‘Honey, you've handled it for the rest of your life, you'll never have to worry about another Father's Day. I will remember this one," said Carter.

Alison is now focusing on her wedding in August.

"He'll get to go walk me down the aisle and take the grandkids to Disney World or whatever he wants to do," Alison said. "That right there is worth everything."

The Carter family hopes their story will encourage others to consider donations. Right now, about 3,500 people in Georgia are waiting for a kidney.
Piedmont Healthcare says kidneys are the most common organs donated by living donors.
