Head On Crash Kills Driver, Two Children

Posted: Updated:
Pico Rivera, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) An investigation was underway today into a two-car head-on collision that killed a young man and two children in Pico Rivera.

The children were ejected from the rear seat of one of the cars, a Honda Civic that was traveling north in the 3500 block of San Gabriel River Parkway around 8:45 p.m. Thursday, said Lt. Andrew Meyer of the sheriff's Pico Rivera Station. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

Family members told a news photographer at the scene that one of the children who died was a 13-year-old boy who had just celebrated his sixth-grade graduation. A sheriff's sergeant had earlier said the deceased children were 9 and 11.

A third child who was also ejected from the rear of the Honda was hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said. The 20-year-old man driving the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene and a female who was in the front passenger seat was taken to a hospital in critical condition, said Sgt. Rudy Ramos, also of the Sheriff's Pico Rivera Station.

Two women in the other vehicle, a Nissan Sentra that had been southbound on San Gabriel River Parkway, were taken to a hospital in serious condition, Meyer said.

A preliminary investigation indicated the Honda crossed into southbound lanes and collided with the Nissan, he said.

San Gabriel River Parkway was closed in both directions following the crash, which was being investigated by the sheriff's Traffic Services Detail, Meyer said.

The scene was not cleared until about 3 a.m.
