Facebook has clarified a photo posting policy after being criticized for removing post-mastectomy photos of breast cancer survivors.

According to the HeraldSun.com, a Change.org petition gathered over 21,000 signatures after a photographer was banned for post-mastectomy pictures categorized as pornography.

On its website’s Help section, Facebook issued a statement to the question: Does Facebook allow post-mastectomy photos?

“Yes,” the statement said. “We agree that undergoing a mastectomy is a life-changing experience and that sharing photos can help raise awareness about breast cancer and support the men and women facing a diagnosis, undergoing treatment, or living with the scars of cancer. The vast majority of these kinds of photos are compliant with our policies.”

The statement continued, “However, photos with fully exposed breasts, particularly if they're unaffected by surgery, do violate Facebook's Terms. These policies are based on the same standards which apply to television and print media, and that govern sites with a significant number of young people.”

The HeraldSun.com reported that the petition asking Facebook to update its policy on nudity was started after a photographer was banned for posting post-mastectomy photos on the page, The SCAR Project.

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- Pope Francis has given a lift to two lucky kids during his general audience in St. Peter's Square. A particularly jovial Francis hopped off his white, open-air car Wednesday to greet a group of fifth graders from Perugia who presented him with a T-shirt from their school. Seemingly joking, Francis asked if any of them wanted to take a spin through the square. "Me! Me! Me!" they yelled.
