DC area cleans up after storms down trees, disrupt power service

WASHINGTON -

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service say the storm that darkened skies and dumped rain on the D.C. region Thursday was a "low-end" derecho.

Those storms are known for powerful winds that travel in a straight line over hundreds of miles.

Emergency officials confirmed a tornado hit Montgomery County.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge was closed for a period while the storm passed.

There were no reports of significant damage in the Baltimore area.

At the height of the storm, more than 39,000 homes and businesses lost electricity.
