Washington, D.C. ranked seventh in most expensive cities to visit

Posted: Updated:

Washington, D.C. now ranks seventh in most expensive cities to visit in the U.S.

A survey, conducted by TripAdvisor, gathered numbers for the average total cost of a visit to find the five most expensive cities and five least expensive cities as vacation destinations. Trip costs included hotel stay, taxi fare, dinner for two and cocktails for two.

At an average of $446.13 total cost per visit, the District is just two dollars cheaper than the fifth most expensive city, Chicago. The top five lists Chicago, $448.45, San Francisco, $471.89, Boston, $504.25, New York City, $504.25 and at the top is Honolulu, $504.94.

The least expensive cities to visit are Portland, Ore. $347.67, Atlanta, $331.14, Dallas, $328.55, Miami, $318.62 and Las Vegas took the number one spot at just $272.94 average total cost per visit. The difference between the costliest city and the best bargain is dramatic. Travelers can spend one night in a Honolulu hotel or three nights in a Las Vegas hotel for the same price.

Statistics from the survey also showed that the average nightly rate for a 4-star hotel has risen 18 percent, Orlando, Fla. has had the largest increase in hotel prices up 33 percent from last year and the South is the most affordable region in the nation.
