US Open Traffic Headaches

Posted: Updated:
ARDMORE, Pa. -

Golf fans are flocking to Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, getting ready for the US open.

But with all the excitement comes some traffic headaches for residents of the mainline.

The front lawn of homes in Ardmore are taking a beating, but the owners should have plenty of money to pay for new sods because parking near the Merion Golf Club is a hot commodity this week.

According to home owner Ray Landry, "They're begging to park. I've been charging $30, $40 a shot."

87-year-old Ray Landry lives close to the golf course. On Monday, a day that should have been a complete wash-out with the rain, "I had this filled yesterday. I made almost $1,000 … In one day!"

Roads are barricaded everywhere, the closer you get to the course.

But nobody's really complaining, at least not right now. Not even the bridal shop owner who may lose business this week.

According to Bridal Shop Owner Sabrina Ann, "I mean, it hasn't been here since '81. It may never come here again, so it's fun to be a part of it."

"I'm not complaining one bit."

Nicole Ferrara and her family, and more than a few others, make up the informal welcome committee for the tens of thousands of visitors who will walk past in the days to come.

"It's very cool to see something this big come to our area," said Ferrara.

A long-awaited return for the old timers who remember vividly when it happened last, back in 1981.

According to golf fan Larry McCaffery,"Trevino and Nicklaus, and Chi Chi. All the guys that I remember. I don't hardly know the young guys, except their parents maybe."

Memories will be made here that will last a lifetime. David "Lefty" Snyder still remembers when he snuck in as a 7th grader, and Arnold Palmer saved him from getting tossed.

"So I actually yelled out Uncle Arnie, Uncle Arnie, like he was my uncle," remembers Snyder, "He actually turned around and the marshal backed off."
