Gary woman digging in garden finds skeletal remains

Posted: Updated:
GARY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A northwest Indiana woman's gardening project ended almost as soon as it began Tuesday morning when she found human remains in her yard.

As she overturned soil in her back yard at 1300 DeKalb Place in Gary, she uncovered a rug. Inside the rug, she saw a hand and other skeletal remains, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

Gary police Cpl. Michael George and Patrolman Greg Smith arrived and summoned supervisors, who called for detectives and the Lake County Coroner's office.

Police said the resident had lived at the address, in the east side Aetna neighborhood for less than three years.

Investigators didn't say if they could determine whether the remains are from a man or woman.

Anyone with information should call police at (219) 881-7477.
