Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke: Causes and symptoms

When you're out in hot temperatures, how do you know if you're just getting hot and sweaty or if it's something more serious, like heat exhaustion or heat stroke?

Video: Capt. Jonathan Jacobs of the Phoenix Fire Dept. explains the different stages your body goes through.

Less serious signs of heat stroke:

* Cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat
* Heavy sweating
* Faintness
* Dizziness
* Fatigue
* Weak, rapid pulse
* Low blood pressure upon standing
* Muscle cramps
* Nausea
* Headache

Serious signs of heat stroke:

* high body temperature
* the absence of sweating, with hot red or flushed dry skin
* rapid pulse
* difficulty breathing
* strange behavior
* hallucinations
* confusion
* agitation
* disorientation
* seizure

Severe symptoms:

*absence of sweating
*rapid pulse & difficulty breathing
*strange behavior--hallucinations, confusion, disorientation, agitation
*seizure
*coma
