AAA Mich.: Gas prices could fall as troubled refinery goes back online

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

There could be some relief at the pump over the next weeks in Michigan.

AAA Michigan says a refinery believed to be part of the reason for high gas prices across the Midwest, and especially in Michigan, is back up and running.

Michigan motorists have been paying an average of $4.22 a gallon, the highest average in the continental United States.

The auto club says the average price is about 4 cents less than Michigan's all-time high gas price average of about $4.26, set on May 4, 2011.

AAA Michigan says a Mobil refinery in Illinois went back online Wednesday after being shut down for two months. Officials expect prices to slowly work their way back down. "It was one of several in the Midwest that provide much of the gasoline for this area so having that refinery back online really is good news for all of us motorists," said AAA spokesperson Nancy Cain.

Meanwhile in Lansing, lawmakers plan to address the issue of high prices with Attorney General Bill Schuette on Tuesday.
