DPS announces new goals for its Summer School Academy

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

Detroit Public Schools announced bold new goals for its 2013 Summer School Academy to be held June 17 through July 26 with programs targeted to attract students from outside of the district in need of credit recovery courses and a pre-kindergarten transitions program to provide enrichment activities to students prior to entering kindergarten.

A K-8 program will be offered with a focus on social studies and science-areas where students received low-ranking MEAP scores-integrated with language arts and mathematics. This program will be mandatory for under-performing students in grades 4-8 at 37 schools. A total of 35 schools that are on the state's priority list will provide Extended Year programs from June 17 through July 12 based on each school's normal business hours.

This year's Summer School Academy will target an estimated 14,000 students.

All students who qualify for the 2013 Summer School Academy should have received a letter mailed home to parents beginning last week. The Academy also requires a professional development component for all teachers. For more details, visit detroitk12.org/summer-academy-2013.
